Popshot Magazine
2011
Illustration
_various editorial illustrations for Popshot Magazine.
  • Popshot Magazine
  • Popshot is a lovely little poetry and illustration publication put together by Jacob Denno twice a year. The magazine is available worldwide with free postage, and there is some incredible work in there from the likes of Sam Green, James Roper, Kate Copeland and RaphaĆ«l Vicenzi to name just a few.

I have been lucky enough to be asked to work on the last two issues of Popshot, including the front cover of issue 5. The poems are always of a great standard throughout so inspiration really isn't hard to come by, and as a result I've been pretty pleased with what I have produced.

    Hope you like it.
  • The Lighthouse
    by Allison Louis Walker

    Adrift she comes
    hills and valleys,
    orchards undone,
    laid bare her crevices,
    her amphibious mind worn smooth.
    Frayed and tattered,
    she is angels on threads,
flashing the sun to the sky ---
    little glimpses.

    Torrented, turbulent
    in glassy iridescence
buoyed by the iron wings of desire.
From her bended elbow fly kingfishers,
    their thorny crowns
    good luck, hope, a sanctuary
    cradled in her secret hollows,
    tender places slick
    with the sheen of industry.

    Both bound and boundless
    from her mouth flows memory
sound lit like rain, release recumbent
breath caught between chime and reflection.
    She's wings of a feather,
    light ephemeral,
    her nudity of being
    pouring luminous limpid
    into permeable me.

  • When I Say I Have Come to Love You
    by Gregory Heath

When I say I have come to love you
I do not mean that I have become
    accustomed to your morning moods
or the way you reduce my friends
    to nervous wrecks at parties.

When I say I have come to love you
I am not talking of time having passed,
of feelings that grew imperceptibly as flowers,
bursting one day into tender shocking blooms.

When I say I have come to love you
it is not because you please me.
You are reckless, you are spoilt,
and you are careless with my heart.

    God help me.
When I say I have come to love you
I mean that is what I am here for.

  • EMULSION
    by Matthew Fieldhouse

This is the bow and arrowed child,
the supple, soft, bone marrowed child,
    the sherbert sweet, marshmallowed child,
with a mouth that's full of maps,

    and rosebud sap,
the kind that coarses through his limbs,
fills his head with playground planets, penny sweets and bruising shins,

    that summer skin,
with grit packed scars on mud packed knees,
fills his eyes with cornfield continents, paper planes and clambered trees,

    such jamboree,
but as the molten years flick by,
I've painted that marshmallow child in Dulux One Coat White,

    now out of sight,
layer on layer of matt emulsion,
he's covered now, white smothered now, by an act of adult compulsion,

    a strange expulsion,
but on occasion comes a day,
where the paint gets chipped, emulsion splits and that child comes out to play.
